Bit Rates in Audio Source Coding

چکیده

Waveform coding of audio signals at low bit rates generally results in coding errors. In high-quality applications these must remain inaudible. The bit rate required to code audio signals without audible errors depends on both the signal's power spectral density function and masking properties of the human ear. It is shown how rate distortion theory and psy-choacoustic models of hearing can be used to compute lower bounds to the bit rate of audio signals with inaudible distortion. Subband coding applications to magnetic recording and transmission are discussed in some detail. Performance bounds for this type of subband coding systems are derived.

Very low bit rate parametric audio coding

In this thesis, a parametric audio coding system for very low bit rates is presented. It is based on a generalized framework that combines different source models into a hybrid model and thereby permits flexible utilization of a broad range of source and perceptual models. The developed parametric audio coding system allows efficient coding of arbitrary audio signals at bit rates in the range o...

Very Low Bit Rate Audio Coding Development

Audio coding at very low bit rates requires very efficient evaluation of characteristics of the signal sources and of perceptual properties of the human ear. An overview of models for the signal source employed in different coding schemes is given. Some of the basic concepts for perceptual quantization and coding of model parameters are shown, including approaches for scaleability with respect ...

Speech and Audio Coding for Multimedia Communications

We have seen rapid progress in high-quality compression of telephone speech and wideband speech signals. Linear prediction, subband coding, transform coding, as well as various forms of vector quantiza-tion and entropy coding techniques have been used to design efficient coding algorithms which can achieve substantially more compression than was thought possible only a few years ago. In the cas...

Ogg Vorbis: Subjective assessment of sound quality at very low bit rates

This technical report is focused on comparison of sound quality of open source audio compression format Ogg Vorbis on very low bit rates (32 and 64 kbps) with three other widely used formats (Windows Media Audio, MPEG-4 AAC and MPEG-1 layer 3). In the first part is a brief description of Vorbis algorithm. Then the MUSHRA test method is described. The third chapter is about entire preparation pr...

Huffman code based error screening and channel code optimization for error concealment in perceptual audio coding (PAC) algorithms

The class of Perceptual Audio Coding (PAC) algorithms yields efficient and high-quality stereo digital audio bitstreams at bit rates from 16 kb/sec to 128 kb/sec (and even higher bit rates). To avoid “pops and clicks” in the decoded audio signals due to erasure or undetected errors from transmission over unreliable channels, e.g., in the context of digital audio broadcasting (DAB), channel erro...
